Bigelow Tea Looks At How The Ethical Tea Partnership Supports Producers
Tuesday, 1 April 2014
While sipping your tea today, take a moment to reflect upon the tea leaves, where they came from and who helped them reach your mug. The Ethical Tea Partnership (ETP) thinks about these issues all the time and works hard to ensure that the tea industry is socially just. Bigelow Tea is proud to be a member of this organization!
One vitally important area that the ETP monitors is “Producer Support,” which means helping producers improve many social issues that they may struggle with. The five categories the ETP focuses on in this area are:
Factory health and safety – including the safety of all workers involved in tea production.
Agrochemical management – including training producers how to use the safely
Fair treatment of workers – including contractual issues, working hours, labor relations, the right to collective bargaining and discrimination and harassment
Gender – including eliminating abusive and discriminatory behavior and sexual harassment
Environmental management – including wildlife and biodiversity
The Ethical Tea Partnership’s work in the area of Producer Support is important to everyone who loves tea and respects the planet. Bigelow Tea believes that tea leaves are a treasure—and anything that can be done to ensure they are produced in an ethical, sustainable way is good for all of us.
