Bigelow Tea Unveils New Packaging

Wednesday, October 23rd, 2013

btFBwed

Change can be good. At Bigelow Tea, where we embrace tradition, we’ve taken a big step forward with our packaging. As we will mark our 70thanniversary in 2015, we’ve given our boxes of tea a modern design that showcases our long and flavorful history. According to our CEO Cindi Bigelow, “We wanted to tell more of the Bigelow story – who we are as a company, as a family, our dedicated efforts to create the best recipes possible, and why it matters.”

Our redesign gives our black, green, herbal, and other teas a streamlined look with vivid colors and engaging descriptions of our teas. Updated product details will feature interesting company stories and juicy tidbits about tea, including why you should never squeeze your tea bag after brewing.

Ease of use is also a key factor. These sleek boxes will sport a handy tuck tab for easier opening and closing. And since our employees play an important role in our success, every box will include the name of its Bigelow Tea packer and a clearly visible “best by” date. The teas themselves, however, remain the same. Like our first tea “Constant Comment”®, our products will stay constant in quality and taste. Their boxes will hold the same number of tea bags, and each one will still be wrapped in a foil pouch to preserve its freshness!

All of our redesigns will make their debut in stores nationwide by this winter. If you can’t wait or want to learn more about this process, check out our video below.

Our look may have changed, but our taste remains the same—great!

Bigelow Tea Goes The Extra Mile With Packaging Details

Friday, March 11th, 2016

It’s said that quality is in the details, and Bigelow Tea is a true believer! As you may have noticed, Bigelow Tea boxes brim with small touches that reflect this third-generation family-owned tea company’s passion for tea and joy in bringing it to consumers for 70 years. So it was a thrill to read a third-party review in Converter News that highlights “eight things to like about Bigelow Tea cartons.”

Each feature cited in the article is by careful design and came about as part of a refresh of the packaging in 2013, in anticipation of Bigelow Tea’s 70th anniversary in 2015. The goal was to showcase the company’s long and flavorful history with vivid colors and engaging stories, while also enhancing ease of use as well as showcasing the pride Bigelow employees feel when they bring you a great cup of tea. Of course, as noted in the company’s response to a question from @RateTea on Twitter, you’ll find no change to the delicious, high-quality tea protected in foil-wrapped pouches inside each box of Bigelow Tea!

Here are eight design elements that have made the new packaging a winner with consumers and industry insiders alike:

 1. The UPC barcode on the bottom of the box – Each one is in a distinctive shape to reflect the tea variety inside.
 1. Personalization – On the bottom of every box it is noted who packaged the tea, using the worker’s first name and last initial.
 1. Best enjoyed by …” – This appears instead of the standard “use by” date.
 1. Sustainable packaging statement – Included is a gold heart that mimics the gold in the company logo, as well as encouragement to “do your part” to recycle.
 1. Caff-O-Meter – Lets you know how much caffeine is in your tea. You’ll also find helpful brewing tips.bigelow tea raspberry tea
 1. Unlock the freshness – A gold key points to the nifty “tuck tab” closure.
 1. Company history printed on the top – One of nine different stories from Bigelow Tea history is featured on every box of tea.
 1. Color scheme – “As satisfying as a fresh-brewed cup o’ tea,” according to Converter News!

Bigelow Tea Shares 70th Anniversary New Year’s Resolutions!

Friday, January 2nd, 2015

bigelow tea 70th anniversary constant comment

Bigelow Tea is taking a moment to pause, reflect and prepare for 2015—and to share a few New Year’s resolutions as the Bigelow family gears up for the company’s 70th anniversary! So much has happened since Ruth Campbell Bigelow created “Constant Comment®” in her kitchen back in 1945. Yet Bigelow Tea is incredibly proud to have remained a family-owned and operated business committed to blending and packaging the highest quality teas right here in the United States of America.

Here’s a look at the ways third-generation President and CEO Cindi Bigelow and her staff will keep the values that guided Ruth—dedication to America, quality and family—at the forefront of their mission in 2015:

Share the Bigelow Family’s Story and Passion for Tea – The Mobile Tea Bar is crisscrossing the country to inspire tea drinkers new and old with free fresh-brewed tea, fun tea facts and a comfy spot to learn about Bigelow family lore. Check the schedule to see when the #bigteabar will arrive in a community near you!

Support the Troops – Tea for the Troops is going strong after several years and nearly 4 million tea bags sent to troops serving in Germany, Iraq, Afghanistan and Korea. It’s Bigelow Tea’s way of thanking the men and women who protect and serve the USA as a portion of the proceeds from the sales of our three American Breakfast teas goes to support our troops.

Brew Up New Teas with the Finest Ingredients – Bigelow Tea’s master tea blenders are always experimenting with new flavors, and hopefully you’ve had a chance to try the latest: Salted Caramel black tea, and Peppermint Bark and Chamomile Vanilla herbal teas. Stay tuned for more!

Happy tea drinking in 2015 and beyond!

New Bigelow American Breakfast Gives Tea a Caffeine Boost!

Tuesday, October 7th, 2014

bigelow tea american breakfast

Tea drinkers longing for a stronger wake-up brew – and coffee drinkers wanting to add variety to their repertoire of caffeinated beverages – now have options! Bigelow Tea introduces American Breakfast teas, an all-new line of robust black teas naturally formulated with 50% more caffeine than the average cup of tea.

bigelow_caffeiene

New niche, new opportunity

Bigelow American Breakfast Tea creates a new niche in the category that will be embraced by tea lovers and coffee drinkers alike. As one early taste tester noted: “This tea is perfect for someone like me who likes the boost and buzz of coffee but not the acidity. I would keep this on hand as an alternative to my morning java, as well as for a mid-morning or afternoon pick-me-up – not just for breakfast.”

Not your ordinary cup of tea

Line priced at $2.99, this unique and innovative beverage naturally delivers all the benefits of Bigelow’s smooth and flavorful black tea with a higher caffeine boost than typically found in a cup of tea. It’s the perfect way to start the day — or get an extra dose of energy any time of day, without nerve-jangling side effects. The full line consists of:

Perfectly blended pick-me-up for any time of day.

New Bigelow American Breakfast Teas are specially formulated with natural black tea extract – a concentrated form of brewed black tea – to deliver 60-90mg of caffeine per cup, versus the typical 30-60mg in regular black tea.

Yet despite the significantly higher caffeine content, drinkers will not experience the ‘rush and crash’ effect typical of coffee thanks to L-Theanine, the naturally occurring compound found almost exclusively in tea.

Cindi Bigelow, 3rd generation president and CEO of the family-owned company, explains what tea drinkers instinctively already know. “The lift you get from the caffeine in tea is different from that of coffee. That’s because tea has the added benefit of Theanine, a naturally occurring component in tea. Studies have shown this unique combination gives tea drinkers a sustained energy boost and, at the same time, a feeling of relaxation and focus similar to what is achieved through meditation.”

All natural, all delicious

True to family tradition, Bigelow American Breakfast Tea is crafted with premium, all natural ingredients to create a beautiful cup of tea. Its superb tea leaves are from the preferred high-grown bushes sourced from the world’s finest tea gardens. These pure blends — even the honey-flavored option that derives its flavor from natural honey, contain no sugar and no calories.

Like all Bigelow teas, each bag is individually wrapped in Bigelow’s signature foil pouch to protect it from air, moisture and surrounding aromas, to keep the tea as fresh and flavorful as the day it was blended. This special packaging makes it easy to tuck away in a pocket or handbag to enjoy the fresh, robust flavor on the go.

And All-American!

Bigelow American Breakfast Teas are teas created for the American consumer’s palate and are blended and packaged in the U.S.A.

Consumers will be further pleased to know that a portion of the proceeds from the sale of the American Breakfast Tea line goes to support our U.S. service men and women.

In the words of Cindi Bigelow, “I invite you to sip a cup of our beautiful American Breakfast Tea; made in America, by an American family, for the American consumer. And as always, we hope our teas delight you.”

Bigelow Tea’s Teabags and Wrappers Are Much More Than Just Packaging!

Tuesday, February 9th, 2010

Believe it! Your Bigelow Tea teabags and the wrappers that envelop them have a significant impact on the aroma and taste of the tea you drink! While many people think wrappers and teabags are simply forms of packaging, at Bigelow Tea the bag and the foil wrapper are carefully crafted components, integral to the overall tea-drinking experience.

image014

When tea lovers got together with Cindi Bigelow for a Tea Social in New York City in January, Cindi talked to her special tea guests about the often-overlooked teabag and its wrapper. Stephanie from The Tea Scoop was at the event, and afterward she shared a fantastic summary of Cindi’s lesson on her blog. Check it out!

As part of the event, participants learned that wrappers (or barriers) are rated from 0 to 10, with a 10 keeping the teabags freshest. Bigelow Tea wrappers are rated a 10. Simply opening the wrapper of a Bigelow Tea bag and enjoying the aroma of what’s inside gives consumers an idea of how important a wrapper can be. As Stephanie at the Tea Scoop happily noted:

“When I sniffed Bigelow, I found the strength of the aroma startling.”

Cindi also asked the guests to tear open teabags and see what’s inside. Some teas contain filler: tea dust, stems, and “prills” of flavoring and small leaves. Bigelow Tea, however, contains tea leaves, real ingredients (like orange rind in Constant Comment) and spices—never dust or prills. As Stephanie at The Tea Scoop put it, “I was completely blown away by the difference.”  Check out Cindi’s demonstration in this video:

Try this at home and see; smell and taste the difference a premium tea bag and wrapper makes. At Bigelow Tea, we take the quality of our ingredients and materials seriously, so we can provide the best tea-drinking experience possible!

COOL NEW ORGANIC INTRO’S FROM BIGELOW® TEA AND ARIZONA BEVERAGE®

“Drink it in!”

arizona-organic-rtd-group

FAIRFIELD, Conn. (May 13th, 2009) – Bigelow Tea® and AriZona Beverage® are bringing a delicious new line of organic green teas to the RTD marketplace. These new entries build on the strengths of their partnership: Bigelow Tea Company is a leading innovator in the specialty tea industry, and AriZona Beverage Company is a powerhouse in RTD.

Their new offerings in partnership are:

 • Organic Green Tea Acai White Cranberry: Regarded as a miracle fruit by many, the acai berry’s tantalizing tropical flavor blends exquisitely with white cranberry to create a uniquely flavorful green tea.
 • Organic Green Tea Original Green: The pure, clean flavor of perfectly brewed, all natural green tea … light, refreshing and rich in nutritional benefits.
 • Organic Green Tea Lemon Ginger: Delightfully subtle yet tart, its delicate, lemony flavor is balanced with the gentle spice of ginger.
 • Organic Green Tea Mango Lychee: Fantastically fruity! Juicy mango and exotic lychee combine for a unique and delectable taste of refreshment.

Rapidly Expanding Segment

Specialty Green Hot Tea has grown 36% over the past 5 years; with Bigelow being the top selling green tea brand in the country. Bigelow has been a key force in the explosive growth of green tea consumption, with ongoing entries and exciting new flavor blends that keep the category fresh and appealing.

The new RTD line reflects Bigelow’s proven expertise in quality and taste, and marries beautifully with AriZona Beverage’s expertise in packaging and distribution. Both companies share a belief that organic products need to be affordable, so consumers can frequently enjoy the pure, healthy benefits.

In these new, 100% natural, organic green tea products, the healthy benefits include:

 • Rich in antioxidants
 • Loaded with Vitamins: C, B3, B5, B6 and B12
 • No artificial flavors or colors
 • No preservatives

In an age of growing concern about the caloric content of RTD beverages, these new teas are refreshingly light … sweetened with just a touch of organic sugar cane, and only 50 calories per 8 fl.oz. serving.

Natural Fit

Equally committed to quality, Bigelow and AriZona find their partnership is “a natural.” Cindi Bigelow, president of the family-owned company, says that “Working with AriZona is refreshing and fun. Instead of following the standard business model, they run their business according to their own rules…and that means making a delicious product for great value in outstanding packaging. They never release a new product without the owner truly liking it! I think that is unusual in today’s marketplace but it’s exactly what we do at Bigelow. That is our entire focus – to make the best tasting teas at a price people can afford in attractive and protective, packaging.”

Because of this synergy, Cindi adds, “AriZona is delightful to work with. They are the perfect partners for our family company, which has been passionate about creating perfect tea products for more than 60 years!”

Luscious Graphics

The distinctive packaging wraps the bottles in tempting colors and attractive designs. The graphics with a clean fresh eye appeal sure to attract the younger RTD consumer to the Bigelow franchise. The 20-oz bottles will be sold in grocery stores, convenience stores and delicatessens. All bear the USDA/Certified Organic seals.

Bigelow Tea Remembers When Mrs. Bigelow “Moved The Pony Stable”

Monday, November 25th, 2013

btmon_Bigelow Tea Remembers When Mrs. Bigelow “Moved The Pony Stable”

Ruth Campbell Bigelow on the left with her husband David Bigelow

At Bigelow Tea we are so proud of our company’s history and of the members of the Bigelow family who worked extremely hard to turn a little dream into a huge reality! Our new packaging includes stories about the Bigelow family and Bigelow Tea’s history, and we’d love to share one with you today!

Back in 1945, Ruth Campbell Bigelow was trying to establish a market for her new product “Constant Comment” Tea. The going was tough. One evening Ruth was talking about a discouraging day when her sister said: “Remember … Mama moved the pony stable.” This phrase about the pony stable contained an important message—one that encouraged Ruth to keep working hard to bring her tea to the public. Here’s the story.

As a child, Ruth’s family had a pony named Bottoms who lived in a little stable. One day, her father announced that the family was moving to the other side of Providence. Bottoms was coming too, but without his stable. The children lamented that Bottoms would never be happy, and finally, Mama said, “The stable will come.”  And it did.

The move commenced and they all paraded across Providence. Four rented horses and six hired workmen moved the stable while Bottoms trotted behind them, pulling the family along. Well-wishers, advice-givers and even a few hecklers followed. But the job was done. That night, as the children slept in a strange new house, Bottoms slept in his familiar stable.

So, in 1945, as Ruth relived that scene, the significance of her sister’s comment was clear: if you wanted to do something badly enough, you could. From that point on, when Ruth was feeling defeated, she would say, “Mama moved the pony stable” and find the courage and ingenuity to carry on, creating a business that meant so much to her and her family.

If we all believe we can “move the pony stable,” imagine how much we can accomplish! With these amazing, strong family members behind us, it’s no wonder that today Bigelow Tea is the number one specialty tea company in the country!
