Charleston Tea Plantation Ushers in New Harvest Season with 4th Annual First Flush FesTEAval!

A Celebration of America’s Largest Tea Garden

Fairfield, CT, May 4, 2010 – Nothing says SustainabiliTEA like the beginning of the 2010 crop harvest in America’s largest tea garden! To celebrate the new harvest, Bigelow Tea’s very own Charleston Tea Plantation, in collaboration with The Bridge at 105.5, will host the 4th Annual First Flush FesTEAval on Sunday, May 16th, 2010, 11am – 6pm. The event is a fun-filled, one-of-a-kind “island celebration” – attracting residents and visitors from Charleston and surrounding areas to the charming Wadmalaw Island. Festivities will include live music, local art, trolley rides, mouthwatering cuisine and, of course, plenty American Classic Tea!

The First Flush FesTEAval, named for the tea garden’s “first flush” of new growth harvested in the spring after a winter’s rest, is an exuberant celebration honoring the production of the most singular and splendid cup of tea! American Classic Tea is harvested from the Camellia Sinensis tea plants, lovingly grown on the plantation’s 127 acres.

“We look forward to this event each year as we gather to celebrate a new season of tea in our exquisite tea garden. Of course, the real host of this occasion is Mother Nature, herself! We’re thankful for her bounty and toast to her while sipping American Classic Tea,” said Cindi Bigelow, President of Bigelow Tea.

Bigelow Tea Celebrates 65 Years of Entrepreneurial Spirit

Fairfield, CT, March 31, 2010 – 2010 marks a very important year for Bigelow Tea (www.bigelowtea.com) – their 65th anniversary.

With the creation of Constant Comment® Tea in 1945, Ruth Campbell Bigelow changed the American tea scene by reinventing the way Americans enjoy this healthy beverage.  Ruth’s entrepreneurial spirit launched a family business that is now in its third generation, and which sells over 100 specialty teas.

In this video, Cindi Bigelow, granddaughter of Ruth (and President of Bigelow Tea), celebrates Bigelow’s 65 years in business by visiting Charleston, SC – home of the Bigelow-owned Charleston Tea Plantation – and talking with local business owners to find out what fuels their entrepreneurial spirit.  As Ruth herself learned 65 years ago, all successful entrepreneurs share one common trait: “Do what you love.”

Learn How to Make a Greenie Martini with Bigelow Tea

Fairfield, CT, March 17, 2010 Cindi Bigelow, President of BigelowTea, recently displayed her cocktail wizardry in an engaging video demonstration, called “How to Make a Greenie Martini with Bigelow Tea.” Cindi demonstrates how easy (and fun) it is to make a celebratory martini with two delightful and essential ingredients: Bigelow® Green Tea and vodka!

A quintessentially NaughTEA beverage, the Greenie Martini is a delightful Bigelow Tea concoction with only one caveat: “the most challenging part is getting the cap off the shaker,” Cindi Bigelow comments, tongue-in-cheek.  This martini will leave you wanting for more and Bigelow Tea offers a cornucopia of NaughTEA libations and recipes online – where there’s something for everyone.

This engaging video ends with a contest of who has the better martini shaker technique – mother (Eunice Bigelow) or daughter (Cindi Bigelow)? You’ll have to decide for yourself!

WAYNE GRETZKY JOINS THE TEAM TO CHAMPION BIGELOW® GREEN TEA

Fairfield, CT, February 21, 2010 – Talk about a power play! The Great One, Wayne Gretzky, has teamed up with the Bigelow Tea Company as a spokesperson for North America (Canada and the U.S.). As the embodiment of sports excellence and wholesome vitality, Wayne Gretzky is a perfect fit with the Bigelow Green Tea “story.”

In keeping with Bigelow’s customer centric style, this exciting news first launched on the Bigelow blog with a weeklong teaser contest. Daily Twitter clues were posted and a Classic Tea Chest stocked with Bigelow Tea favorites was awarded to the lucky winner who guessed the new spokesperson was “The Great One.”

Gretzky, who has played pro hockey for both Canadian and American teams, earned his title as The Great One by winning 4 National Hockey League championships, 9 Hart Trophies (hockey’s MVP award) and 3 NHL All-Star Game MVPs. An incredible athlete, he also holds 60 different NHL records — including a record for holding the most records! He is generally regarded as the best player in the history of the NHL, and has been called “the greatest hockey player ever” by many sportswriters, players and coaches.

Gretzky’s personal relationship with the Bigelow brand laid the groundwork for the sponsorship. “Just as hockey is a natural for me, quality is a natural for Bigelow Tea. It’s a family company whose values I admire, and whose product is unbeatable. Bigelow teas just seem to taste fresher and better – I’m pleased to be associated with a product I believe in.”

The admiration is well returned. “It’s so incredibly exciting, and such an honor, to have a sports figure of Wayne’s magnitude as our spokesperson,” said Cindi Bigelow, President of the family-owned Bigelow Tea Company. “He is not only a true champion but a wonderful human being – humble, gentle and kind. When he visited our facility, he shook hands, signed autographs and took photos with everyone.  No wonder they call him the Great One.”

Joining the Pro-Bigelow Lineup

Gretzky joins an impressive group of top sports figures who feel strongly about the Bigelow brand: Joe Torre, Terry Francona and Phil Simms are all spokespersons. “It’s been a remarkable journey with Joe, Phil, Terry, and now Wayne,” says Cindi. “We’ve attracted sports enthusiasts across the continent and around the world to become loyal drinkers of Bigelow Green Tea.”

A Power-Packed Campaign

As spokesman, Gretzky will star in a marketing campaign encompassing print, broadcast, online and social media, in-store and account-specific retailer programs, and more. Bigelow’s campaign will launch with a line of four “Gretzky Green” green teas. The bilingual (English and French), 40-bag boxes will include:

Green Tea with Pomegranate: a masterful blend of flavorful pomegranate with delicate green tea.

Green Tea with Lemon: The refreshing, light lemony taste adds a zesty note to the delicate flavor of green tea.

Green Tea: for green tea purists, a fragrant, light, and mellow brew reputed to have many healthy properties.

Decaffeinated Green Tea: the same delicious flavor of regular Bigelow Green Tea in a naturally decaffeinated form.

The satisfying, toasty notes of Bigelow Green Tea are what set it apart from all others. Our tea bags are wrapped in flavor protecting pouches to preserve freshness.

Health Benefits of Green Tea

Green tea is rich in polyphenols. These powerful antioxidants help control free radicals, the unstable compounds that destroy cells. Research has shown green tea to have many health benefits, including fighting the effects of aging and reducing the risk of some cancers and other diseases including high cholesterol and high blood pressure. It can bolster the immune system to better resist flus and other viral diseases, strengthen capillaries and prevent infection.

Competitive Advantage

Gretzky’s huge fan base in both Canada and the U.S. gives Bigelow a strong advantage in the North American green tea market — and a wonderful opportunity to introduce more consumers to the healthy enjoyment of Gretzky Green teas. As Cindi sportingly puts it, “With The Great One proclaiming Bigelow as his M-V-Tea, we’re looking forward to many championship seasons ahead!”

BIGELOW TEA BLAZES TRAIL ONLINE

ENGAGING IN SOCIAL MEDIA NETWORKS AND REDESIGNING THE WEBSITE HELPS THE BRAND TO GROW ON AND OFFLINE

Fairfield, CT November 18, 2009 – As a family-owned company, Bigelow Tea® understands the value of personal connections, and has built its company on those values for 65 years. Now, taking advantage of today’s online tools, Bigelow Tea is connecting with both new and old customers in a far more personal and interactive way than ever before possible.

While traditional advertising has been instrumental in establishing Bigelow Tea’s brand, the company understands that a new generation of Internet users expects more from their favorite companies: namely, the ability to have a two-way conversation.  So Bigelow Tea has embraced interactivity, reaching out across multiple online networks to engage directly with tea drinkers of all ages via the following channels:

  • The Bigelow Tea Talk Blog is brimming with frequently refreshed tea news, brewing tips, recipes, recommendations and health information.  The blog also provides an opportunity for Bigelow Tea’s management team to personally “talk” about noteworthy developments such as ongoing green initiatives, product developments and more. (http://bigelowteablog.com/)
  • Twitter is one of the fastest-growing social networks.  As a microblogging site, Twitter allows Bigelow Tea to interact with tea lovers from around the world in near-real time, providing healthy tea tips and general information in 140 character bursts.  (http://twitter.com/bigelowtea)
  • Facebook is another population of over 1500 tea aficionados that follow the Bigelow Tea brand.  If you are a “fan,” then you can watch Bigelow Tea videos, read status updates, check out the blog feed, buy tea and learn more about the Bigelow Tea company from the “boxes” page. (http://www.facebook.com/BigelowTea)
  • Video Channels are additional sites where Bigelow Tea hosts several short made-for-online “Tea-V” videos. Cindi Bigelow teaches viewers how to prepare a perfect cup of tea, she visits with tea drinkers on the streets of New York City and teaches Wally the Green Monster at Fenway Park how to drink tea which is both educational and entertaining.  Especially popular is her chat about the health benefits of green tea with sports idols Joe Torre and Phil Simms. Videos are cross-posted on major web video destinations like YouTube, Blip TV and more.  (http://www.youtube.com/bigelowtea)

The core of any online presence, of course, is the website where ease of use and interactivity continue to be a high priority for Bigelow Tea.  To launch the Bigelow Tea redesign and to ensure brand consistency and intelligent navigation, a specially designed commerce platform was utilized to implement the Bigelow Tea websites of Novus, Bigelow Tea’s Hispanic site, Food Service, Charleston Tea Plantation and the main website.

“Talking about tea literally gave our company its start 65 years ago,” says Cindi Bigelow, the company’s third-generation President. “When my grandmother, Ruth Campbell Bigelow, first created her signature tea, the enthusiastic feedback she received from her friends inspired nothing but ‘Constant Comments’ which has now grown to be America’s #1 specialty tea flavor.  It’s exciting to talk tea with “friends” much like my Grandmother did in her kitchen 65 years ago. We’re reaching out online to our fan base and meeting new tea drinkers and everyone, including us, is enjoying the shared information and the sense of community!”

INTRODUCING BIGELOW HERB PLUS TEAS

With Powerful Healthy Ingredients in Every Delicious Cup!

Herb Plus Group-11027

Fairfield, CT, September 29, 2009 – Bigelow® Tea is introducing an exciting line of innovative herbal teas to the market.  These products are formulated with healthy herbs and nutrients such as Probiotics, Omega 3, and vitamins.  Bigelow has created a truly unique, flavorful line of teas that now add additional health benefits to each cup.  The introduction of these teas combines the delicious taste experience that Bigelow is known for “plus” revolutionary nutritional benefits for hot beverage products.

The new line of four delicious and unique flavors include Pomegranate Blueberry Herb Plus, Cranberry & Ginseng Herb Plus, Wild Blueberry Acai Herb Plus and Lemon Ginger Herb Plus.

“We created this new product line to be naturally flavorful and delicious, while providing important health benefits,” says Cindi Bigelow, President of Bigelow Tea. “Our research and development team was brilliant in selecting ingredients that are rich in flavor and nutritional properties.  We know there has been much recent interest in the health benefits of green and black teas, but we felt it important to also include the awareness about the value of herbal teas.  Herbal teas have been used for centuries to help improve overall health. To make them ever more powerful and to appeal to a more health conscious consumer, we’ve included additional important nutrients to our new Herb Plus line.”

Lemon Ginger Herb Plus aids the digestion with a soothing and enjoyable combination of lemon and ginger. The blend is fortified with the Probiotic GanedenBC30® to help support a healthy digestive system. Probiotics are live, beneficial microorganisms that are important in maintaining a balance of healthy vs. harmful bacteria in the digestive tract. In its search for the ideal Probiotic, Bigelow chose GanedenBC30 (pronounced “Gone Eiden, B-C-30”) because unlike traditional probiotics, GanedenBC30 is able to withstand the heat needed to brew tea and survive harsh stomach acids to reach the intestines – the goal for any Probiotic.  With its blended flavors of lemon and ginger, both known for their digestive properties, we’ve added lemon grass, lemon verbena, lemon peel, rosehips and a hint of cinnamon to make Lemon Ginger Herb Plus tea a simple, delicious way to enjoy better digestive health.

Pomegranate Blueberry Herb Plus supports heart health.  It is a delectable way to get a dose of heart healthy Omega 3 DHA and the antioxidant benefits of Vitamin C.  Bigelow’s talented development staff added these nutrients to a berry rich blend of blueberry, pomegranate and sweet blackberry leaves, combined with Rooibos, wolfberry (Goji) leaves and hibiscus.

Cranberry & Ginseng Herb Plus supports a healthy memory with a tantalizing, tangy blend of herbs that combines Choline and a combination of B Vitamins.  Choline is important in brain development and is a required nutrient in infant formulas in the U.S.  Choline also has a synergistic effect when added to B Vitamins.  Cranberry has wonderful antioxidant properties and ginseng is an age-old herb which is believed to help to reduce stress, improve memory and help support better physical performance.

Wild Blueberry Acai Herb Plus is a delicious, healthy drink filled with nutrients that can help the immune system.  Vitamins A and C add antioxidant value to a hearty blend of wild blueberry, hibiscus, rosehips and grape seed extract.  With a subtle cinnamon note added to the flavor profile, this tea is as refreshing as it is good for you.

These products are considered food under FDA guidelines.  They are not dietary supplements.  While they contain important nutrients and support a healthy lifestyle, they are not designed to treat, cure or prevent any disease.  This line of Herb Plus teas is completely caffeine free, with low or no caloric content.

Now, consumers have four more reasons to enjoy Bigelow Tea!

Bigelow Tea for the Troops – A Token of Our Thanks

American Classic Tea for American Heroes

American Classic Tea

Fairfield, CT, July 20, 2009 – They put their lives on the line each and every day – to protect and to serve. “They” are our American troops who are fighting to protect our freedom far away from home, in Iraq and Afghanistan. The Bigelow family (www.bigelowtea.com), committed to bringing a little bit of “home” to these courageous men and women, collaborated with their wonderfully supportive employees and friends to produce a special run of American Classic Tea – just for our American soldiers.

“One of my greatest joys at Bigelow Tea is the work we can do to try to make a difference,” said Cindi Bigelow, President of Bigelow Tea. “We wanted to do something to show just how much we appreciate these men and women, so we decided to send them our version of a thank you card.”

For over a week, the Bigelow manufacturing plant in Louisville, Kentucky was buzzing with activity as they wrapped and boxed nearly 2 million American Classic tea bags to be sent overseas and to airports where the troops are either leaving for or returning from a deployment in the Middle East. Bigelow Tea employees were beaming as they worked, at warp speed, on this very special production run. “It’s a lot of work, but we’re very pleased to do it,” said Bigelow Tea plant manager Steve Keys, summing up the overall enthusiasm in a recent clip on local Louisville TV channel, WDRB-Fox.

>The selection of tea chosen for this thank you gift was none other than Bigelow’s American Classic Tea which was 100% grown on American soil. Nurtured in the country’s largest tea garden, the idyllic Charleston Tea Plantation purchased by the Bigelow family in 2003, the American Classic tea was lovingly packaged in a beautiful custom-made box designed by Bigelow family friend, Duke Saltus. Helping to facilitate the shipment of 100,000 boxes of tea to troops overseas was another Bigelow family friend, the USO Regional Vice President (US) Jeff Hill. The Bigelow family, friends and employees are all so excited to send this heartfelt token of thanks to the brave men and women of the American Armed Forces.

To our troops and their families: “We thank you and we are proud of you!”

Tea and Hospitality: Tour the Charleston Tea Plantation with Cindi Bigelow

America‘s Only Tea Garden!

Fairfield, CT, June 25, 2009 – A little Southern hospitality goes a long way in South Carolina’s Wadmalaw Island, home of America’s only tea garden, the Charleston Tea Plantation. Cindi Bigelow, President of Bigelow Tea (www.bigelowtea.com), gives a fun and informative video tour of the idyllic plantation, purchased by the Bigelow family in 2003.

In the words of David C. Bigelow, the company’s co-CEO, “This is a wonderful, peaceful place…which never could be replicated again. We are very happy that we were able to basically get to save this place from the bulldozers.” Eunice Bigelow, wife and co-CEO, agreed:” It gives us a great deal of pleasure to hear from people who’ve been here say how wonderful it is, how much they’ve gotten out of it and how often they want to come back.”

The plantation receives over 30,000 visitors each year, many of whom are curious to see a real, unique tea garden – in all its 127-acre splendor – and perhaps want to plan their weddings/special events on the grounds or to explore the rich history of Charleston or to simply just enjoy a lovely a cup of the plantation’s signature American Classic Tea. Visitors from near and far are fascinated by the knowledge imparted by plantation founder and passionate tea aficionado Bill Hall, who now partners with Bigelow Tea in running the Charleston Tea Plantation.

“Come visit us. You’ll drink the only tea grown in America.”  Take the tour with Cindi: http://www.bigelowtea.com/about/bigteav.cfm.
