Oh, Hi, Vanilla Chai! 5 Reasons To Love This Bigelow Tea Flavor

If you like your tea a little on the wild side, then Bigelow Tea’s Vanilla Chai is calling your name! Bigelow Tea has several chai flavors, and each begins and ends with a special blend of mountain grown hand-picked black tea featuring exotic chai spices. But what does that even mean? Well, read on and find out a little more about this tea called Chai…

Oh, my, chai.

The easiest definition of Chai is spiced milk tea. Chai originated in the East and dates back to thousands of years ago as a concoction sipped by Eastern royalty, though it did not actually contain tea leaves at the time. The drink grew in popularity when the British set up tea plantations in India in the 1800’s, leading to widespread variations across the country and eventually the rest of the world.

Spicy historical healer.

Chai was often used as a healthful tonic for common ailments such as colds or indigestion.

How do you pronounce Chai?

Chai is sometimes pronounced with a “k” – like, “ki.” But, the correct pronunciation uses the “ch” sound.

Chai is tea. And tea.

Chai – or cha – is also the word for tea in many languages. In fact, the chai tea made with milk and spice that is so popular in India is properly known as masala chai.

All in the family.

There is no fixed recipe or preparation method for masala chai and many families have their own versions of the tea. However, it typically includes a blend of rich black tea, ginger, cardamom, cloves, peppercorn, nutmeg and cinnamon. And all masala chai has four basic components: milk, sugar, cardamom and ginger.

Hopefully we’ve spiced up your day with these chai tea tidbits. From its history to its recipe, there’s so much to learn and so many flavors to enjoy. So brew up your favorite and see if you can pick out all the different ingredients that make Bigelow chai flavors so delicious. Or just sip and savor, that works, too!

This Is Why You Should Start Your Day With A Mug of Bigelow Earl Grey

A true classic, Earl Grey is a tea fit for a queen (more on that later). Ask anyone. A cup of Bigelow Tea Earl Grey tea will make your day. This refined, yet bold, black tea is highlighted by bright and fragrant citrus notes – thanks to the finest bergamot oil sourced year after year exclusively from Calabria, Italy. Wait, you may ask, what’s so special about this bergamot oil?

The single town of Calabria is where 80% of the world’s citrus bergamot fruit is grown. Since the 1970s, Bigelow Tea has worked with the family farmers in Calabria who supply the best oil of bergamot to create this classic blend. Another third-generation operation, these family bergamot farms are dedicated to expertly growing citrus bergamot fruit without the use of pesticides, using natural, organic methods from orchards that have been in existence for over 80 years. They’re all about the integrity of the flavor – just like the Bigelow family.

So, about that queen? Yes, the Royal Highness Queen Elizabeth starts her morning with a pot of Earl Grey tea. In fact, this cheeky writer even spent a week eating – and drinking – like the queen. And, well, suffice to say, she enjoyed quite a few mugs of Earl Grey. Who can complain about that?!

Another fan of Earl Grey? Bob. Who’s Bob, you may wonder? Just the coolest guy ever who also happened to be president and CEO Cindi Bigelow’s CPR instructor. And, hey, there’s even a fun – and entirely impromptu – moment on camera where he tells us why he has been a Bigelow Tea Earl Grey devotee for more than 40 years. Wow! As he emphatically explains in this fun video, the best thing about our Earl Grey is the purity of the ingredients: black tea and natural oil of bergamot. Tag #TeaProudly if you agree!

  1. Oh, that’s old history. Peaches are so rad, they’ve been around for longer than all of us. Science tells us that peaches have been enjoyed by people for at least 7,500 years, according to well-preserved ancient peach pits found in China. Considered to be the favorite fruit of emperors, peaches were written about in Chinese literature dating back to the 10th century. By way of Persia, Greece and the Roman Empire, the peach was brought to the Americas by Spanish explorers in the 16th century.
  2. Stop and smell the roses… errr… peaches. Believe it or not, peaches are a member of the rose family! Who knew?! Peaches are also related to plums, apricots and almonds (distant cousins, maybe??).
  3. So good, there’s even a month for them. Today, peaches are a staple in the summer fruit basket—August is even recognized as National Peach Month! Celebrate all month long with Bigelow Tea’s blends bursting with the flavor of peach for you to enjoy.

Go Wild With Bigelow Wild Blueberry With Acai Herbal Tea

Sweet and tart, sweetheart. That’s how best to describe a cup of Bigelow Tea’s Wild Blueberry with Acai Herbal Tea. Yup, acai. But how the heck do you even pronounce it? Easy. AH-sigh-EE. “Ahhh…..” (like the sound you let out when you’ve had a really long day and just got a minute to sit down and watch Netflix); “sigh,” (like what you do when you realize you ran out of tea); and “Eeeee” (like the “Wheeee – without the “W” part – you make when you’re on a roller coaster). See? Simple.

But what exactly is acai? And why does it pair so well with blueberry? And why will you absolutely love it if you don’t already? Funny you should ask…

Deep in the Amazon

Açaí is a delicious black-purple berry that resembles a large grape and grows on tall, slender palm trees in the Amazon, where it has been consumed in the form of a pulp (purée) for centuries. So, yeah, it goes pretty far back.

Here and there and everywhere

Acai has become pretty trendy these days. Look anywhere online or in popular juice bars or cafes, and you’ll see gorgeous acai bowls or smoothies. However, in different parts of the world – take Brazil for example – acai is also used as a sauce for fish dishes. Looking for a more savory recipe? Try this Blueberry Acai Vinaigrette. It’s great on a bed of greens or grilled chicken.

Oh, hi, blueberry and acas.

Acai is one of the ingredients in Bigelow’s Wild Blueberry with Acai Herbal Tea. Along for the ride – err, in the bag – are real blueberry pieces, rose hips, hibiscus, sweet blackberry leaves, apple, cinnamon and orange peel. Talk about a fruit bouquet. Mmm… Yes, please! Try a cup (hot or iced, both are nice!) and see just why it’s a fan favorite.

Whoa. Did you know that Americans consumed almost 84 billion servings of tea last year?? That’s ahhh-mazing! Just think, millions of us around the country share the love of tea in common. Historically, while tea holds a special place in many cultures near and far, today Bigelow Tea considers tea drinking a proud American tradition! And the Tea Association of the U.S.A. has the numbers to prove it – talk about #TeaProudly!

  1. Go halfsies? Each day, more than one half of the American population drinks tea. Regionally, the South and Northeast have the greatest concentration of tea drinkers.
  2. Like, obviously. Approximately four in five consumers drink tea, with Millennials being the most likely (87% of millennials drink tea). Yeahhh!
  3. Black tea for the win. About 80% of all tea consumed in 2016 was black tea, 16% was green tea, and the rest was Oolong, white and dark teas.
  4. Important import. The U.S. is the third largest importer of tea in the world, after Russia and Pakistan, and the only western country to grow in tea imports and consumption.
  5. Ice, ice, baby. Nearly 80% of tea consumed in America is served over ice.

Do you know how much we love tea at Bigelow? Let’s hope so! They’re as (North) American as blueberry pie

According to folklore, blueberries are one of only a few fruits native to North America. However, it wasn’t commercially grown until the 1900s. We know, we know… Apples tend to be more popular in American history and traditions, but really, it should be red, white and blueberry!

A Cultural Phenomenon

In 1981, Ronald Reagan’s inauguration sparked the creation of the blueberry-flavored Jelly Belly. In fact, more than 6,000 pounds of them were consumed throughout the festivities!
